Spring 2019 Courses

This Spring semester I am offering three different courses at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. The modern American survey course, History 121, and then two upper division courses, Historical Methods (History 298) and Introduction to Public History (History 306).

History 121 - Modern American History from 1877 to Present

Primarily for non-History majors, this course looks at how the American Century unfolds from 1918-2018. The course explores American history through the prism of foreign policy, economics, and social events. The main question asked continually throughout the semester will be, “How do Americans, whether in an official capacity in government or in their everyday lives, react to and shape the world around them?”

History 298 - Historical Methods

Introduces the research methods, utilization of historical sources, documentation, and writing skills necessary to complete a significant historical research project. Skills mastered in this course should enable students to improve the quality of all writing and research required in all 300-level courses offered in the History Department. Focuses on American, European, or non-Western civilization, depending upon the instructor. Permission of instructor required. Required for all history majors. Spring, annually.

History 306 - Introduction to Public History

The course is designed to explore the basics of Public History and bring forth debates from major themes in the discipline. The course will focus on three major topics within the field in a manner that introduces bet practices of the discipline For an introductory course these should be limited to topics such as Commemoration, Challenges of Preservation, cultural tourism, Digital History, and Cultural Resource Management (CRM). The readings presented will facilitate the discussion in the class, revolving around students understanding of these debates in the major fields. The material in the course will prepare students for more specialized avenues of Public History, graduate school programs, and/or careers in the field.
